 RESEARCH AROUND THE WORLD

This week's Blog Assignment required that we navigate through several international Early Childhood websites that were of interest. I selected, the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA). This organization is said to be the largest international early childhood organization and is comparable to that of the National Accreditation for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
In review of the site, some of the current international topics I found were topics that talked about, gender differences and the male/female roles in early childhood education, the use of technology with children under five years of age, video observations of children's perspectives on their lived experiences and challenges in relationships between researcher and children, scaffolding and how to increase development and also articles on the influence of children and play. Their website offers a host of journals filled with research articles in early childhood and development.
Some surprising facts that I've gleaned is that the organization offers authors the opportunity to have their work published and read. Information that is posted and archived on the international site is selective and is one of four early years journal indexed by the Institute for Scientific Information.
Other noteworthy information I found on the website is that the site offers a section titled "Special Issues" or monographs. This link offers archived articles that focus on topics or developments in the early childhood field such as:
1). up-to-date overview of current knowledge and developments in the field, and an evaluation of relevant empirical studies
2). presentation of new developments, applications or policy implications.
3). the development of new research methodology

These topics all provide insight on new developments within the early childhood field within an international scope. In addition, the site offers other information regarding various cultural differences that affect many ethnicities and many countries.

  1. Barbara,
Thanks for sharing what you found! This was not a site I spent time on but after reading your post and the amount of information one can find on the site, especially if it compares to that of NAEYC, I will be looking at this site and bookmarking it. I like that they allow for authors to publish on the site, I think that is an awesome idea! Was there any one specific area of the site which interested you the most?

    1. Keshia, I particularly liked the Links and Partners link which directs you to other affiliates that are like-minded organizations. There were two links from other counties that are also big on early childhood research and education. The Korea Institute of Child Care and Education has some different research articles unlike what I've seen or researched and the other was the Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Association. I see both of these resources as a viable option when possibly searching for articles.

  2. Barbara, I found it very interesting that you compared the EECERA website to NAEYC, because I did the same with the Australian site. While there is much to be learned from differences, it is important to be aware of similarities as well!

  3. Sara, I agree with you as I think that having access to other international sites gives us understanding in the types of research studies other countries have conducted. Many of the articles have the same research topics but offer different approaches as to what was researched.

  4. Barbara,
I didn't choose this organization to search, but it looks like you have given us a great preview! I can see how I can relate to the topic of the use of technology for children under five years old. This is a very hot topic in the United States and I recently was talking to some colleagues about this topic and things got heated everyone has a different perspective on it. I like that the website seems up to date and that is a good resource for professionals to use in the field. Also I find that is very important that there is presentation of new developments as well. Great coverage!

  5. Barbara,

Great post. The current international topics you found on the Education Research Association website are very relevant topics that definitely need to be discussed in times like today. This website also seems to have a lot of great resources. I like that the website has a special issues section that I feel will be excellent as a resources for early childhood professionals.
